Mother Theresa remembered

After the owners of the Empire State Building refused to light the building in honor of Mother Teresa, Bronxites mobilized with a, "Day of Service," on August 26, that included a food and clothing drive at the Jewish Community Council on Pelham Parkway, a mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral and two hundred angry demonstrators turned up at the Empire State Building. The day ended with the lighting of the Hutchinson Metro Center at 1200 Waters Place, in blue and white in honor of Mother Teresa's birth a century ago.

Hundreds of Bronxites turned out for a free concert in Morris Park, featuring 1960s singer and teenage heart throb Frankie Avalon. The event, part of Senator Jeff Klein's, "Summertime Symphonies," concert series, was held on August 26, at Loreto Park. Avalon, now 70, and his band preformed a host of hits from his career that began at age 12, including, "Beauty School Drop Out," from the 1978 film, "Grease." The Philadelphia-born Avalon signed autographs and talked with fans after the show.
